Two of the nation’s best teams faced off on Sunday when McDonogh hosted Gonzaga.
Gonzaga entered the contest undefeated, having already bagged wins over impressive opponents such as Boys’ Latin and Hill Academy. McDonogh won two big games after dropping its season opener to Haverford School in overtime.
After going back and forth through the first quarter and a half, McDonogh broke away with four goals towards the end of the second, three of which came during a non-releasable Gonzaga penalty. By the break, McDonogh led 7-3.
The two teams leveled out in the third and entered the fourth at 12-8 advantage McDonogh. In the fourth quarter, Gonzaga made a late push, led by the talented Timmy Monahan. The Purple Eagles efforts were in vain as McDonogh held on to a 13-11 win.
McDonogh was led by Jack Parr and Robert Clark, each netting a hat trick. Blake Gray and Connor Young both followed up with two goals.
Gonzaga’s Monahan led the game with four goals but was unable to give his squad the extra boost over the Maryland squad.
Both teams next challenge comes against another one of the nation’s top teams, Culver Academy Prep. Gonzaga faces the Eagles in two days and McDonogh, two days after.
